Uitschakelen Genuine Advantage

This week, Microsoft started requiring users to verifiy their serial number before using Windows Update. This effort to force users to either buy XP or tell them where you got the illegal copy is called 'Genuine Advantage.' It was cracked within 24 hours.

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

It turns off the trigger for the key check.

Repair a damaged rpm database

First informally: When a process _is_ so killed [sometimes due to a loss of power crash, sometimes due to a third party helper application dying without cleaning up the lock files at exist, sometimes due to an impatient admin], it will almost always leave some small corruption behind in the RPM 'SleepyCat' db based database. Usually the simple

rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db* rpm -vv --rebuilddb

will remove the lockfiles (which start with that distinctive "__"), and fix the database damage left behind. [Note: we have added the option -vv here, so that there is visible progress and lots of detail during the rebuild process -- A worried admin is often impatient at a lack of visible progress -- this option causes the rebuild process to be quite verbose.]

Je moet zelf voor N en M de correcte controller nummers invullen en voor
X en Y de correcte SCSI IDs invullen.

Voor het root filesystem:

 # metainit -f d11 1 1 cNtXd0s0
 # metainit d12 1 1 cMtYd0s0
 # metainit d10 -m d11
 # metaroot d10
 # lockfs -fa
 # reboot
 # metattach d10 d12

Voor swap:

 # metainit -f d21 1 1 cNtXd0s1
 # metainit d22 1 1 cMtYd0s1
 # metainit d20 -m d21
 # vi /etc/vfstab
(verander de swap partitie in /dev/md/dsk/d20)
 # reboot
 # metattach d20 d22

Voor de overige filesystems:

 # metainit -f d31 1 1 cNtXd0s3
 # metainit d32 1 1 cMtYd0s3
 # metainit d30 -m d31
 # vi /etc/vfstab
(verander het buffered filesystem in /dev/md/dsk/d30 en
verander het raw filesystem in /dev/md/rdsk/d30)
 # reboot
 # metattach d30 d32

en dan d40, d50, enz.

Als je klaar bent, kun je met metastat kijken of de zaak in orde is en
alles in sync is.

Disable autoplay in WindowsXP

I came across the policy by accident just about an hour ago. LOL

If it is not configured or is set to Disabled then this is not the problem. It is only a problem if the this policy is set to "Enabled"

Start > Run gpedit.msc

User Configuration > Adminstrative Templates > System
Disable Autoplay

This is the official Explaination for this policy

"Disables the Autoplay feature.

Autoplay begins reading from a drive as soon as you insert media in the drive. As a result, the setup file of programs and the music on audio media starts immediately.

By default, Autoplay is disabled on removable drives, such as the floppy disk drive (but not the CD-ROM drive), and on network drives.

If you enable this policy, you can also disable Autoplay on CD-ROM drives, or disable Autoplay on all drives.

This policy disables Autoplay on additional types of drives. You cannot use this policy to enable Autoplay on drives on which it is disabled by default.

Note: This policy appears in both the Computer Configuration and User Configuration folders. If the settings conflict, the setting in Computer Configuration takes precedence over the setting in User Configuration."

RedHat 9 Fonts-fontconfig

Probleem: beperkt aantal fonts in o.a. Mozilla

<!-- Font directory list configured on Mon Feb 24 17:42:07 EST 2003 -->

        <dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>
        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1</dir>
        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/OTF</dir>
        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID</dir>
        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF</dir>
        <dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo</dir>

XviD niet goed (groen) weergegeven

Probleem: I have some xvid videos. they are all green on my xp box. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few different builds of the xvid codec but that doesnt seem to help. there is nothing wrong w/ the vids as I can play them on my 2K machine just fine.

Oplossing

    0) Log in with administrator privileges
    1) install the xvid codec
    2) if you're running windows xp go to start --> run ---> and type
in "mplayer2" without the quotes and hit ok
    3) open up your xvid file that's green using this older media
       player
    4) pause the video
    5) right click on the video and choose properties
In the latest version of MediaPlayer, this option is greyed out.
    6) go to the advanced tab
    7) in the box you will see something named "ffdshow" or something
like it don't quote me on the exact name but it's something
       similar
    8) double click that and a new box will pop up
    9) uncheck the xvid box
    10) now open up the file again either in your original media
player or this old one and it should be working fine

Disable IPv6

12 July 2004

FC2 by default uses IPV6. This causes serious slow down in DNS queries.

To disable IPV6: As root, you must add the line: "alias net-pf-10 off" (without quotes) to the end of your /etc/modprobe.conf file.

-OR-

Quick solution:

[root@charon root]# echo "alias net-pf-10 off" >> /etc/modprobe.conf

A reboot is required.
